Aiming net zero for all greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
In order to contribute to climate targets, greenhouse gas emissions reduction and climate change adaptation measures will play an important role in the coming years. Primary way to reach net zero by 2050 is to significantly reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve this goal, greenhouse gas cuts must be complemented by durable carbon removals, either through nature or technological solutions. The aim is to eliminate the remaining emissions and thus achieve a zero level of emissions impacts.
Our climate target supports our journey towards the international framework and the Paris Climate Agreement target. HKFoods is among the first Nordic food companies to have specified the near-term targets both for industrial energy usage and for the land sector which Science Based Target -initiative has approved.
Carbon handprint
HKFoods collaborate closely with our farmers to generate a climate-positive impact, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions on farms. At the same time we are also committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our production and logistics processes.
Regenerative farming pratices
Together with our contract farmers we enhance regenerative farming practices to produce animal feed like barley, wheat, legumes, and grass forage. Regenerative practices include e.g. cover crops, lighter tilling, improved water management, improving soil health, crop rotation, manure management and using it as fertilizer.
100% carbon-neutral electricity
In our production units, we only use carbon-neutral electricity, for which we have acquired guarantees of origin. In our production units, we systematically improve energy use and carry out energy audits to find ways to improve energy efficiency.
Climate efficient investments
We take climate impacts into account in all our investment decisions. We continuously invest in production equipment, which also reduces emissions from production. For example, we have invested in energy efficiency through a number of heat recovery projects.
All materials for utilisation
By efficiently utilising materials, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact. We reduce systematically production losses and food waste, as well as utilise by-product material flows. Our production by-products are used as efficiently as possible by many other industries, such as the leather, feed and pet food industries. Unused materials of animal origin are used for biogas production. In Finland, we are committed to the material efficiency commitment of the food industry sector.
Sustainable packaging
In the development of responsible packaging, our focus is on material recyclability. In 2023, we were the first food company in Finland to sign the Green Deal commitment to reduce single-serve plastic packaging.
We have set ambitious goals for our packaging by the end of 2030: 100% recyclable packaging
Our packaging responsibility targets are aligned with the European Packaging and Packaging waste Regulation targets (PPWR). In terms of packaging recyclability, we support efforts to develop the recycling infrastructure in our home markets by introducing packaging that is technically recyclable.
